Texas House Bill 5 lays out new guidelines for the Foundation High School Program.
The Foundation Program can be customized with one or more of the five "endorsements" recognized by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The basic academic track required 22 regular credit hours and a student can take an endorsement with the additional curricular requirements bringing the total up to 26 credit hours. The endorsements are essentially the high school version of a college major; by taking courses in one of the five areas, students can earn a diploma with an endorsement in that area.
The five endorsements available to students are STEM, Business and Industry, Public Services, Arts and Humanities and Multidisciplinary Studies.
If you have multiple interests - it's possible to earn more than one endorsement. The endorsement component of your high school experience allows you the student to pursue and explore your area(s) of interest. This not only provides documentation to colleges and employers about a student's dedication to a chosen area but it also provides a much cheaper avenue for the student to discover if this is the area he/she would like to focus before choosing their career or college path.
TheTxGradU8 mobile app allows students to plan their high school degree beginning in the 8th grade all the way through graduation. The student is able to choose and track their regular credit hours to make sure he/she is meeting those regular credit hour requirements and then look at endorsement details and choose an endorsement that will also track those credit. All of this can be done from a hand-held device.
